Samsung dominates pay and go phone market

Samsung ended the year on a high as it was announced that three of it’s prepay phones were in the top four in the UK on the run up to Christmas. The three Samsung devices are the J700, G600 and E250, which are selling well over 100,000 units a week, with Samsung’s F480 Tocco and U600 devices also bolstering its prepay sales.

The key to Samsung’s success it down to it cutting prices, with the highly popular Samsung G600 now under £100 and both the E250 and J700 available for under £40: all the handsets feature £10 of airtime depending on which network operator you choose.

Samsung has seen its prepay market share rise from 19% at the beginning of 2008 to 31% at the end of the year, and has lead its rivals including LG and Sony Ericsson to suggest that the market share has come at the cost of profits, as handset prices fall.
