Palm announces new touchscreen phone

Palm has announced a new touchscreen device that is hopes will take some of the market share from the ever popular Apple iPhone. Called the Palm Pre, the device features a large 3.1 inch touch display and a sliding QWERTY keyboard as well as a 3 megapixel camera.

The Palm Pre will make use of Palm’s brand new touch interface called webOS, which has obviously been inspired by other touch interfaces, but aims to make the Pre one of the most useable touchscreen phones on the market. Palm has also stated that the webOS SDK will also be released to the public, so that third party applications can be made for the device.

The device will also feature Wi-Fi and built-in GPS, Bluetooth and microUSB connections and 8GB of internal memory as well as a 3.5mm headphone socket. The Palm Pre measures 59.5 x 100.5 x 16.95, which is smaller than the iPhone, albeit a bit thicker and weighs 135 grams.

The Palm Pre is set to hit the US first by the middle of the year, with Europe expected to follow a few months after.
