Sony Ericsson to launch its first Android phone by this summer

Sony Ericsson has announced that it will be releasing its first Google Android phone this summer. Sony Ericsson are keeping quiet on the specs of this new phone, but many experts predict that HTC will produce the handset, after the Taiwanese phone manufacturer developed the first Android phone, the G1 and is behind the Windows powered Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 device.

Sony Ericsson joined the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) towards the end of 2008 and is keen to get an Android handset onto the market. Corporate Vice President Rikko Sakaguchi said that the company aims to “develop a handset based on the Android platform”.

In a statement released by Sony Ericsson, it said that the company will be focusing on “products in the higher segment, but later on will also supplement with products for the broad mass market. The first Android phone from Sony Ericsson is expected to show up for the summer.”

Sony Ericsson also stated that the Android operating system would complement its existing mobile operating systems, which include various Symbain devices and the Windows Mobile powered Xperia X1.
